Peizhi Fang was born in China, spent several years living, studying, and working in Canada, and is currently based in Japan. Moving across different cultural and geographical contexts has shaped her sensitivity to the shifting relationships between individuals, their surroundings, and the structures of everyday life.
Working across photography, moving image, installation, and material-based processes, Fang examines subtle and unstable conditions that resist fixed definition. Her earlier work explored elusive interpersonal connections and the suspended tension of something having just occurred or being about to unfold.
Her recent practice investigates how prolonged uncertainty—and the inability to predict when a condition will end—can disrupt everyday routines and alter one’s perception of time, agency, and control. Through rule-based actions, repetition, and material transformation, she traces the gradual deviations that emerge between attempts to maintain order and the experience of losing it.
